Residents, businesses frustrated at power outage fix delay

Hundreds of properties across Auckland are still without power after the weekend's wild storm.

Residents and businesses in one of the worst affected areas have been left thousands of dollars out of pocket, and say they're angry the outage is taking so long to fix.

Papakura resident Brittany Mann has been without power since late Saturday night and says she has two young children to care for.

"We've had a lot of food that has had to be thrown out," she says.

"It's just the smell that's coming out of the fridge - lots of food needs to go, it's a loss."

The young mother is one of around 250 households in the area still in the dark.

But the outage isn't the only hazard - there are loose powerlines just a few houses down.

Ms Mann says Vector crews only started repairs on Monday and the lines have been hanging since Sunday morning.

"It's dangerous, there are a lot of kids in this area," she says.

Down the road, the outage has brought business to a halt at the Pacific Laundromat.

Clothes were even stuck in the washers after power came on for just a short few minutes.

It was quiet at the petrol pump too with the owners losing not just fuel sales, but thousands of dollars' worth of ice cream.

And at New York Fitness, the doors are shut on what's normally its busiest day of the week.

"We've got about 1000 people that come in a day so as you can imagine we've been having phone calls all morning about it being shut," says Kelsey Ross.

It's pitch black inside the gym and means no workouts or classes until the lights are back on.

"Our instructors aren't getting paid. We're not able to work," says Ms Ross.

Vector says it's working around the clock to fully restore power, but ongoing issues with weather and the complexity of some repair jobs are fuelling the delay.
