A teenage girl who taunted police while on the run in Southland has once again had a warrant put out for her arrest.

Southern District Police originally posted a mugshot and description of Lana Tutty, 17, on their Facebook page asking for the public's help to locate her.

Ms Tutty was quick to reply to their call-out, replying with a 'thumbs up' emoiji that caught the attention of the social media world within minutes attracting hundreds of likes.

The taunt on Facebook attracted the attention of media outlets around the world.

The post was swiftly removed, but Tutty's mother pleaded to her runaway daughter to turn herself in.

"I will support her, but she needs to do the right thing," she says.

A warrant was put out for her arrest after she failed to appear in the Gore District Court earlier in the year.

Ms Tutty was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday on wilful trespass and assaults with intent to injure.

Southern District Police have put out a post on Friday asking, once again, for the public's help in locating Ms Tutty which has already attracted more than 100 comments within an hour.

One comment read, "Oh my god this is getting ridiculous, silly girl, I hope she comes to her senses."

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Dunedin police on 03 471 4800.
