Police are asking for assistance from the public after a Christchurch tavern was held up at gunpoint overnight.

Detective Andrew Owens says a man entered the Tavern Harewood in Bishopdale just after midnight.

Two staff members were present when the man, described as Maori and of athletic build, entered the pub with a sawn-off shotgun.

The offender made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and left the scene on foot.

"This was a traumatic event for them [the staff], thankfully no one was injured," Detective Owens says.

Police want anyone with information to contact Christchurch police on 03 363 7400.
