Police talking to man over hit-and-run on elderly couple

Police are talking to a 22-year-old man after a hit-and-run driver slammed into an elderly couple in Auckland on Thursday, sending them flying two metres into the air.

They say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident - although no charges have been laid at this stage.

The husband and wife in their 70s were walking to shops in Mt Eden with their cat when a car flew off the road and onto the footpath.

Neighbours say they knew something was wrong when they heard the sound of screeching car tyres on their quiet dead-end street.

"It sounded like it was travelling quite fast, so we looked out the window and saw an old couple that were hit by the car, thrown over our wall and into our front garden," one said.

A silver Suzuki Swift was abandoned at the scene.

"You could hear the engine still revving, so he hit them and it was like he wouldn't stop. So basically he got out of the car and he took off - so I saw him run and saw them injured - so my choice was - I wanted to help them."

The couple are out of hospital but told Newshub they're still in shock, and consider themselves very lucky their injuries aren't worse.

The man has a black eye with a bad head wound, and the woman suffered bruising.

The couple are thankful their cat Cobweb - who goes everywhere with them - wasn't hurt.

She sat with them as they waited for the ambulance and even stayed at the scene through the night while they were in hospital.
