Super sniffer puppies shown off in Auckland

A new breed of super puppy has been shown off in Auckland on Sunday.

The traditional border security beagles are now being bred with harriers to create sniffer dogs with a little more reach.

For now though, they're just excited - and adorable - seven-week-old pups.

Beagles have been used at borders for decades, but the new harrier breed is taller, meaning they can reach handbags and backpacks more easily.

It means this batch of six puppy parents have an even greater responsibility.

"They have an incredible job; the first year of the dog's life they need to get out and socialise," says Brett Hickman, manager of Detection Technologies.

"These guys are basically going to mould the dog for what we want."

The puppies will spend a year with their foster families before coming back to the training centre. There they will undergo three to four months training to become fully trained dogs, ready to begin their careers on the frontline.

Border Control says life back at the airport is still a good one.

"Working is their fun - they do that all day. Then with our kennel systems they get walked twice a day, so they've got a great life," Mr Hickman says.

For the next year though, their work looks more like child's play.
