A mass clean-up of Waiheke Island's beaches is to take place today.

The event's been organised by charity Sustainable Coastlines, and will kick off at Little Oneroa Bay around 10am until 1pm.

New Zealand band Fly My Pretties will be taking part in the clean-up.

Spokesperson Camden Howitt says they're expecting hundreds of people.

"It's about recognising that we have these amazing spots on our doorstep here in Auckland, and we need to look after the places that we love."

Mr Howitt says much of the rubbish on Waiheke's coastline is washed out from Auckland city.

Volunteers have cleaned up more than 1 million litres of rubbish through Sustainable Coastlines since 2008.

The organisation reports that the most common pollutant removed from beaches is "plastic of unknown origin". That's closely followed by food wrappers, bottle caps and lids, plastic bags and polystyrene.

Single-use plastics comprise 77 percent of rubbish removed from beaches by Sustainable Coastlines in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
