Dozens of tourists are recovering after a nightmare bus trip in the South Island.
Their bus crashed down a bank between Christchurch and Akaroa just after 5pm on Wednesday after it hit a car near Summit Rd.
The tourists on board were from a visiting cruise ship, the Celebrity Solstice, docked in Akaroa Harbour.
Four people were helicoptered to hospital, with two in a critical condition - one of whom is believed to be the driver of the car.
Those with minor injuries were cared for at Akaroa Fire Station.
A woman who didn't see the accident but arrived a short time later says she was told the bus had hit the car.
"The bus was actually over the white line," she told Newshub.
The commercial vehicle investigation unit and the serious crash unit have been advised.
