Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) has launched an investigation after allegations former Silver Fern Tania Dalton's privacy was breached by hospital clinicians.

Ms Dalton suffered a brain aneurysm on Thursday, and was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.

"We have become aware there may have been a breach of privacy involving an Auckland DHB patient," an ADHB spokesperson told Newshub.

"Auckland DHB takes patient confidentiality extremely seriously and we are investigating this in line with our usual practice."

It is believed that clinicians not directly involved with Ms Dalton's case looked up her health information.

This is a breach of the Health Information Privacy Code 1994, and if the clinicians are found guilty they would likely be in breach of their employment contract.

They could then face disciplinary action.
