Huntly tirade: Woman pleads guilty in court

A woman has pleaded guilty to three charges after video emerged of an Islamophobic, expletive-laden attack on a group of women in Huntly.

She can now be named as 27-year-old Megan Walton.

In court on Monday, she pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and to behaving in an insulting manner likely to cause violence.

An earlier charge of assault with a weapon - in this case, a beer can - was reduced to an assault charge.

Walton has been given bail and is applying for restorative justice.

On Saturday, Walton was filmed subjecting a group of Muslim women to a tirade of abuse, calling them "f**king Muslim bitches" and throwing a beer can at them.

On Monday Prime Minister Bill English told The AM Show the woman behind the attack needed to "get her life sorted out".

He denied the attack suggested New Zealand had a growing problem with Islamophobia.

"There's no place for that kind of attack here," Mr English said.

"People living in New Zealand should feel safe regardless of where they come from."
