The union representing junior doctors says it has settled its dispute with the DHBs after a long fought battle over long work hours.

The Resident Doctors Association says they have agreed that rosters must comply with the agreed limits on hours, including:

  • Doctors will not be required to work more than 10 consecutive days and will be rostered a corresponding day off during the week for each weekend day worked.
  • Doctors will be rostered no more than four consecutive night shifts of up to 10 hours
  • Doctors will be allowed to work back to back weekends - however they will be given some rostered days off next to weekends where the doctor is not working to give them meaningful time off
  • The format of the rosters will be decided locally, between local DHB management and the resident doctors working on that roster

The doctors will also receive a 1.5 percent pay rise, and there will be an increase in the rates paid when a resident doctor carries out work over and above that in their job description.

The deal still needs to be confirmed by DHB chief executives on Thursday, then has to be ratified by union members.
