Police say they have identified the alleged offender who attacked a 72-year-old man at Little Rangitoto Reserve in Remuera last week.

"We know that this has left the wider Remuera community worried and afraid," says Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman, Auckland City Police.

"Police want to reassure the community that although no charges have yet been laid, the offender has been identified and is currently in the custody of health authorities."

The victim was at the park with family around 4:30pm when he was approached by the man.

The offender attempted to draw him away from the park and the victim was struck in the neck with a weapon, believed to be a knife. He received a minor wound which required medical attention.

"We intend to charge the man and are working closely with other government agencies in this regard," Det Snr Sgt Newman says.

"He is not on the streets and because of this we do not believe the alleged offender presents any ongoing or further risk to the Remuera community at this time."

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident, and the victim is expected to make a full physical recovery.
