Mazda New Zealand says at this stage they are aware of 11,300 vehicles in New Zealand that could be affected by a recall.
The models in question are Mazda 2,3 and 6 that were purchased between September 2007 and March 2012.
However the company is waiting on confirmation of how many used import Mazda vehicles are in this country - and they estimate that this would be about an additional 11,000.
A problem has been identified with the lifter arm on the driver's seat in these vehicles, and a component of the lifter arm could crack over time.
A notice issued by Mazda Australia said "On the driver's seat of the affected vehicles, it is possible that the seat height adjustment lifter link may crack, or the lifter link retaining nuts may separate."
Mazda will repair both the new and used vehicles at no cost.
The design issue could lead to a rattle, or bolts coming loose and at the worst case scenario could mean the seat is tipped forward and the driver cannot sit up straight.
Mazda New Zealand general manager Glen Harris told Newshub the company is waiting on parts to arrive so that they can undertake the necessary repairs, and will probably work progressively from the older models to the newer models.
Mr Harris says owners of these vehicles should wait for Mazda to contact them about having the problem repaired, but if they are concerned they can visit a Mazda leadership and have an inspection on the spot.
