Police have confirmed a body found at Karaka Bay in Wellington on Saturday morning was that of a 19-year-old who went missing while swimming in the Hutt River on Thursday night.

The man's body was discovered by a member of the public around 7am on Saturday.

The teenager and a friend went into the water near Belmont School on Thursday, police said. The Hutt River had risen to dangerous levels after heavy rain.

At about 10:30pm a search team was sent out when one of the men told police he could not find his friend.

The weather was so bad on Thursday it wasn't possible to send out the Westpact Rescue Helicopter, but the fire service and police did a riverbank search using thermal imaging equipment.
