One person is dead and two others are injured after a car went into a ditch just after midnight.
The accident happened on SH52 near Pongaroa in the Tararua District, at about 12:10 on Saturday morning.
One of the injured is in a critical condition in Palmerston North Hospital.
The other has minor injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit will continue to investigate the cause of the incident, police say.
Further north at Mahoenui a collision between a truck and a car at 2am left one person in a critical condition.
The crash happened at Hedley Corner, about 5km north of the Awakino Tunnel.
The road remains closed near the intersection of Ngatarawa Road while the Serious Crash Unit investigate.
