Photographer Casey Morton defends controversial Black Power photos

Photographer Casey Morton has defended his controversial series of images featuring Black Power gang members.

Appearing on Three's The Project, host Jesse Mulligan asked him if he was glamourising violent and criminal activity - but Mr Morton disagreed.

"I don't think that was my intention at all," he explained.

"I took the opportunity to shoot the members of this chapter of Black Power to see a different side of them. With the images, people are either going to take them as negative, or hopefully look at what leads these men to end up where they are.

"I understand that it's going to be confronting and challenging, but I think it's also important to bring some light and to allow people to have the conversation about what leads men to engage in gangs in New Zealand."

Mr Morton says he was driven to create the project to tell a story, and he isn't going to make his costs back.
