About 14,500 runners are in the Round the Bays event in Wellington on Sunday which is celebrating its 40th year.

An extra 500 bibs for the 6.5km event will have a special sticker signifying support for those affected by the Port Hills fire in Christchurch. After entries closed organisers allowed for 500 "Run for Christchurch" entries, with 50 per cent of the proceeds going to those affected by the fire.

Half Marathon participants will lead the field from at Frank Kitts Park at 7.45am, followed by the 10km runners at 8.30am. The 6.5km fun run and buggy walk entrants set off at 9.15am.

All events end at Kilbirnie Park.

In Christchurch Sport Canterbury were due to host their own event A Run to Remember, a 10km charity fun run to honour those who lost their lives in the February 2011 earthquake, on Sunday. The event was cancelled because the route is in the Port Hills where firefighters continue to work.
