The grieving family of the late Sir Howard Morrison's granddaughter are preparing for her funeral after she died in an Auckland crash.

Kiriana Morrison, 17, was a rear seat passenger in a car which collided with another on the Northwestern Motorway around 2:15am on Sunday, NZME reports. There were no other serious injuries.

She will be buried next to her grandfather in Rotorua on Thursday.

A family spokesperson called her a "beautiful angel" who was lost in a senseless way.

The former Selwyn College student was taken home to her mother and stepfather, with more than 100 students and staff there to "welcome her home", the spokesperson told NZME.

Kiriana's boss at the Auckland bakery where she worked posted a tribute on Facebook, saying she was a "truly special person".

"Everyone has a funny story to tell about working with kirianna at the Market....she had such a massive personality....She made fast friends wherever she was and always had a good time no matter the circumstances....she always found a way to make the day fun for everyone [sic]," Pukeko Bakery owner Jason Olmstead wrote, adding she was "fiercely loyal" to the company.
