Video: Mad dad tackles BMX rider in skate park

A skate park in the Auckland suburb of New Windsor opened on Saturday, but the day ended in a phone call to police about an alleged assault.

The 70-second video shows Karl Periam, 24, in the midst of a trick on his BMX bike when a boy skates into the bowl; the two cross paths, and the child comes out worse off.

Periam wanders over to apologise to the child who is lying on the ground when his dad steps in and floors Mr Periam.

Kenny Kemsley was behind the camera, and says the father apologised an hour after the incident but it felt insincere.

"He followed up with telling Karl he was still in the wrong and that Karl should apologise again to the kid," he added.

It's not the first time they've come across the man either, Mr Kemsley says.

"[He] has a history of mouthing off at BMXers, he tells us to watch out for kids but he's also a great skater himself and rides fast through the bowl also. I've seen him run into scooter kids and just like us he apologises, there's really no difference."

Mr Kemsley says the kid was back up and rolling 10 minutes later and Mr Periam checked in with him before he left.

Mr Kemsley says accidents are common, regardless of age.

"People go fast and sometimes don't have time to stop. [Kids] learn quick with things like this and at the end of the day they'll forget when they start riding again.

"A lot of the time people just apologise from both ends and everything ends well no matter what age you are."

The Auckland skate park is inspired by the city's volcanic fields and was the final stage of the New Zealand Transport Agency's Valonia Reserve upgrade.
