War planes take to skies of Ohakea

There were foreign jetfighters flying over Manawatu on Saturday, but you can relax - they were friendly.

Thousands of people turned out to see war planes from around the world take to the skies above Ohakea as the Royal New Zealand Air Force celebrated its 80th anniversary.

While there are many air shows around the country, the one at Ohakea is the biggest display of Air Force planes.

It's one of the few opportunities New Zealanders have to get up close to foreign fighter jets.

From the ground, the sound of an F18 roaring through the sky is deafening. Inside the classic Hornet, it's exhilarating.

"Fifteen minutes is like a three hour gym session," the pilot says.

On the ground, many lined up to check out the Japanese KC767 and the Airbus A400M Atlas.

The Air Force is considering replacing its Hercules fleet with the 100-tonne machines which can carry more than 100 paratroopers.

Air Force chief Tony Davies says the weekend is an opportunity for our pilots to learn from their overseas counterparts and for Kiwis celebrate the service's 80th birthday.

Fighter jets have been a rare sight in our skies since the combat wing of the Air Force was disbanded - but they could be returning to the airways over Ohakea.

Singapore is interested in basing a squadron of F15s at the airbase.

Spectators will be hoping for more good weather on Sunday when more aircraft take to the sky.
