An All Black jersey signed by the Sir Colin Meads is set to go up for auction, to raise money for a larger than life-size sculpture of the great.

Community group Legendary Te Kuiti (LTK) is paying tribute to the sporting legend - originally from the area - with a bronze sculpture of the man nicknamed 'Pinetree'.

It's to be erected in the town's main street in June.

"The statue of Sir Colin is presently at the foundry with the bronze ready to be poured; the location where it will be sited is confirmed and everything is tracking along nicely," LTK marketing officer Yvette Ronaldson said.

The jersey was given to Sir Colin in 1994, when he was the All Blacks' manager, and has now been donated for the cause.

"I'm more than happy to donate it - good luck with the auction," he said.

The jersey has been put up for auction on Trade Me.

As well as the sculpture, LTK is hoping to create an interactive museum with rugby memorabilia from both Sir Colin and his brother Stan Meads, an outdoor photo gallery and they want to rename Te Kuiti 'Meadsville' for the course of the Lions' tour.

The statue itself is set to stand at 2.9m tall - around 1.5 times bigger than the rugby great - showing him at the height of his playing career.

Sir Colin was named New Zealand's Player of the Century in 1999.

He's currently battling pancreatic cancer, after being diagnosed late last year.
