Auckland Airport savaged in online reviews after dog shooting

Auckland Airport has been savaged in online reviews for shooting Grizz, an explosive-detecting security dog.

The 10-month old bearded collie/German short-haired pointer cross was six months from graduating and still getting used to the airport environment when he became "spooked" by something.

He escaped, and after three hours of trying to catch him the airport gave up and had him shot.

Since then, angry dog-lovers have taken to Auckland Airport's Facebook page to voice their views.

"Hi, my name is Grizz. I used to work at Auckland Airport with my master trying to keep nice humans safe from nasty humans. I love playing games with my handler, they ask me to find things and if I get it right they play fetch with me," James Bristow wrote in a scathing review.

"I feel different today. Earlier on I got scared by something and I ran away from my handler. I was really scared and ended up in a big field. It was great, lots of humans came along and tried to play catch with me, but I managed to get away from them all.

"Then this man turned up with a big stick. I thought he was going to throw it, but he pointed it at me and then everything went black. Now I'm in a big field by a bridge made of rainbows, with lots of other dogs and animals, but I can't find my humans anywhere. Where am I? I just don't understand."

The commenters have managed to drag the airport's rating down to only three stars.

"Shooting dead a puppy because you are too incompetent to catch it or come up with a better solution....'can't think what else to do, let's kill it'... Absolutely disgusting," Mandy Redgwell wrote, along with a one-star review.

"Hi, I'm planning a visit to Auckland soon. Please could you confirm that if I get lost in the airport or can't find my way, I won't get shot? In light of recent news I thought I'd better check. Thanks," asked Jamie Bennett.

Others questioned if shooting was a normal part of the airport's performance appraisals.

"Had I known that Auckland Airport considers execution an appropriate response to poor performance in airport employees I would most definitely have reported the poor handling of my bag when I flew to Bali last year," said Virginia Ann Myrum.

The airport was also accused of being "heartless", "incompetent", and "disgusting".
