A fight has erupted outside the courtroom where two people charged with murder appeared in Christchurch on Monday morning.

The victim, in his 60s, was found with serious head injuries in a Sumner carpark on Thursday night and died in hospital at the weekend.

When the 38-year-old woman and 20-year-old man appeared in the Christchurch District Court, several people stormed out of the court and a fight erupted in the foyer.

A Newshub cameraman was shoved as it spilled outside.

The man was found around 10pm by a member of the public, after which he was taken to hospital to undergo surgery.

Police said on Friday that the woman had been arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident.

Following the man's death, the charges were upgraded to murder.

A 16-year-old was initially charged with burglary, and with being an accessory after the fact.
