French defecator spotted in Palmerston

The French freedom campers who gained notoriety after one was spotted pooing in a Dunedin street have now been seen in Palmerston, around 50km north of Dunedin.

The couple drew disgust and outrage after one was captured on video pooing in a street outside APET Racing, before pushing the faeces into a gutter and walking away.

She was seen getting back into a white Mazda van, and when the couple were approached by Newshub, they said they were travelling around the country.

They denied any knowledge of the incident, claiming they were in the street overnight because their van was broken.

A photo of their van was snapped by Mark McHoull, who says they made it as far as Waianakarua, about 40km north of Palmerston, before the van broke down again.

Police began investigating the matter after a formal complaint was made and Mr McHoull says police spoke to them at the location.

However, police were unable to confirm this to Newshub.

The incident prompted the French Embassy to warn tourists against open defecation, saying: "Tourists, regardless of their nationality, are expected to obey New Zealand laws and regulations, apply common sense and display good manners".

Freedom camping in non-self-contained vehicles is prohibited in the Dunedin city area, and offenders could be fined $200, the Dunedin City Council said.

But they had already moved on from the three-day Vogel St site by the time a formal complaint was made on Monday afternoon, meaning they were never fined.
