A man has been assaulted and gunshots believed to have been fired at a Christchurch party overnight.

Police received reports gunfire had been heard in Spencer St in the suburb of Addington at around 3am on Sunday.

When they arrived, they found an injured 21-year-old man who had been assaulted.

He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Shell casings from a gun were also found at the address, but no one appears to have been shot, police say.

Police had earlier visited the property at around 9.30pm on Saturday following a noise complaint. They shut down the party and arrested one person for obstruction and resisting arrest.

Police have closed down a section of Fielding Street, between Spencer St and Parlane St, for a scene examination.
