New Zealand horse trainer makes history

New Zealand horse trainer Vicki Wilson has made history by becoming the first Kiwi to win the prestigious 'Road to the Horse' competition in Kentucky.

Ms Wilson and her sisters starred in the hit TV show Keeping up with the Kaimanawas in which they domesticate wild horses.

That experience paid off for this event, where the riders had to pick an untrained horse taken from a ranch in Texas and compete with them in the arena in Kentucky.

But a sudden shoulder injury when mounting her horse almost prevented Ms Wilson from finishing the competition.

"I went to swing my leg over his back and as I did, my arm just dislocated clean out, she said.

She says the pain was excruciating and the decision to get back on the horse wasn't easy.

"When you walk in that arena and that stadium and that round pen you kind of switch everything off, it's more of a mental competition than it is physical."

As well as the title, Ms Wilson took home $140,000, which she's already used to purchase the horse she competed with.

She says she'll definitely be back next year.

"It's pretty incredible the competition, I don't think there's any other quite like it in the world."
