Body found after car drove into ocean

A woman's body has been retrieved after the car she was in hurtled into the ocean in Christchurch on Saturday evening.

The silver Honda was hauled out from the sea by a tow truck just after midday. It's understood the body was still inside the car.

Fire and police surrounded the car with tarpaulins. It's been taken away to be examined by the serious crash unit.

A man, related to the woman, escaped the sinking car, which left Sumner's Main Rd at around 6pm.

The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been made public.

Police have extended their sympathies to the family.
