Polyfest dazzles with amazing cultural showcase

New Zealand is home to over 200 different ethnic groups, and many of them are represented at Polyfest 2017.

Polyfest is the largest Māori and Pacific Island festival in the world, and attracts around 100,000 spectators.

The festival has grown from small beginnings in 1976 when four schools took part.

This year, over 9000 students will perform, showcasing the best from Māori, Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Filipino, Sri Lankan and Niue cultures.

It's being held in Auckland this weekend, and Newshub's Ryan Bridge went along to see what's in store for the public.

"There's even a Hāngi from the Māori corner," he said as he checked out the food stalls. It's a popular choice with children.

The event is funded with help from the Ministry of Pacific Peoples, which made a three-year funding commitment.

It's a one-stop cultural shop and well worth a look, Bridge says.

Entry is $5 per person, but it's free for pre-schoolers.
