Port Hills hero Snapchats fearless fight against fire in bulldozer

For the first time since the February Port Hills fires, Nikora Martin has spoken about his bulldozer heroics that saved many homes.

He got so close to the fires, helicopters with monsoon buckets had to dump water on him so he could keep working.

Mr Martin says he couldn't stop laughing due to the adrenaline.

"It got hot to the point the air con wasn't working," he says.

"Some stages there I had to turn it off because it was blowng just straight heat into me."

Videos he posted to Snapchat show him fearlessly heading towards the fire in order to create breaks, stopping the fire from spreading.

A move praised by authorities, some even calling for him to be honoured for his bravery.
