Riverhead quarry attack: Accused named as Onehunga man

The man who allegedly assaulted a woman who woke up badly injured in an Auckland quarry can now be named as Colin Jack Mitchell.

The 59-year-old Onehunga man pleaded not guilty to the brutal assault, intent to commit sexual violation and abduction in court on Monday.

The woman woke to the attack in Riverhead at 2:12am on February 26, badly injured and found a man standing over her with a bat. Some of her clothes were gone.

She had no memory of the night before and no idea where she was.

Mitchell was arrested at an Onehunga property on Sunday just after midday and a 2008 Ford Mondeo found at the property was seized.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said the victim was "extremely relieved" to hear the news.

"This has been a traumatic experience for her and she is receiving ongoing support from her family, friends and police," he said.

She suffered a broken thumb,  injuries to her face and head and was extremely traumatised by the event.

Mitchell's application for bail was denied and his name suppression lapsed at midnight.

He's due to appear in court again in June.
