Police are asking for information from the public after a 48-year-old woman was sexually assaulted after a concert in Selwyn, near Christchurch, on Saturday night.

Detective Sergeant Phil Sparks says the woman was walking home from the Lincoln Event Centre when she was attacked.

"She left the concert on her own at approximately 6:30pm and walked along Meijer Dr onto North Belt," he says.

"It is in this vicinity that she was grabbed from behind and pushed a short distance off the road to where she was attacked."

The woman lost a heart-shaped gold locket on a gold bracelet during the attack; police are asking anyone who finds it to hand it to them.

"This attack occurred between 6:30pm and 8pm, which means that it was still daylight and members of the public may have seen something that can assist in identifying the attacker."

Police would like to hear from anyone leaving the concert around the same time that may have seen the woman who was wearing a grey dress, brown boots and carrying two small bags.

Anyone with information can contact Canterbury police on (03) 363 7400.
