Swimming against the tide: School fights for pool

In the last six years, more than 150 school pools have closed around the country.

It's meant many schools now have to take students to community pools.

But that comes with challenges of its own including high costs and extra time out of the classroom for students due to travel.

However, some are still trying to keep theirs open, choosing to fundraise in order to keep swimming on-site.

Wellington's Kahurangi School is doing just that.

Their pool is being part funded by Wellington City Council, but there's still a $500,000 shortfall.

The Ministry of Education does help fund pools, but many schools feel the funds are better spent elsewhere.
