A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has struck in the central North Island on Thursday afternoon.

Geonet reported "moderate" shaking from the "strong" intensity quake at 12:58pm, with a depth of 8km, 10km northwest of Turangi.

People reported feeling the quake as far south as Wellington, to New Plymouth on the west coast, and as far north as Hamilton.

"This is the largest shallow Taupo Volcanic Zone earthquake I can recollect in six years observing," J H Gurney wrote on Twitter.

"Eeek! Big wobble in Taupo. And very loud rumble quite a few seconds before the shaking started. Hope all okay wherever it was centred," another local tweeted.
