The Coastguard is assisting a vessel that got into trouble crossing the Bowentown Bar near Waihi.
The boat skipper called for help around 3am on Friday saying he was disoriented and required help.
A rescue boat was launched from Waihi and managed to cross the bar.
It's shadowing the vessel until strong winds and big swells die down. The plan is to escort the boat into Tauranga Harbour.
