A west Auckland Vietnamese sandwich shop has had a rough opening week after being criticised over a homophobic statement on its menu.

Bun Mee Kiwi opened last weekend, offering additional hot jalapeno peppers "unless you're a poof".

The restaurant quickly came under fire on social media.

"On what planet and in what century do you think it would be any kind of good idea for your new business to put a homophobic slur on your menu? ... Totally pathetic," Lisa Dunn posted on Bun Mee Kiwi's Facebook page.

The owners responded to the post, saying: "Woah woah woah people relaxxx.. if the word poof is offensive we will find a more appropriate word... We will remedy so relaxxxx please help us come up with a more PC appropriate word but it can't be Sissy thanks and expect our apologies.... Sorry Lisa we will sort [sic]."

The menu now offers jalapeno, "unless you can't handle the jandal".

"Obviously we stirred a few people the wrong way, that context in which it was used was not supposed to offend anyone so we've done our best to remedy and move forward," store manager John Baxter told Gaynz.co.nz.

"We're from a Polynesian background and so it's not offensive to us."

On Friday the restaurant advertised job vacancies on Facebook, saying it wants to "help people get off Winz".
