Another big storm looms near New Zealand

It could mean rain for East Cape and Gisborne early next week.

Weather forecasters are holding their breath that another storm brewing off the coast doesn't get any closer.

A cluster of thunderstorms is strengthening as it comes down from Vanuatu.

Last week Cyclone Cook had meteorologists fearing it could be the worst in decades, and caused havoc in Hawkes Bay and the Bay of Plenty.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Knowles says it should stay well to the northeast of the country but we could feel some "second hand" impacts.

"There will be some indirect impacts to places in the east - a few showers in East Cape and Gisborne on Monday and Tuesday.  And some wave action."

Metservice says those waves, around Auckland and Northland, could reach four metres high.

Mr Knowles says it's still worth monitoring.

"As with all weather systems you do watch for subtle changes but it seems quite unlikely."
