Prime Minister Bill English has shown off his cooking skills -  but it didn't quite get the reception he might have wanted on Facebook.

"Cooked dinner for the family last night - like if you agree with tinned spaghetti on pizza!" Mr English wrote on Facebook, alongside photos of his creations.

One contained a mixture of tinned spaghetti and canned pineapple.

As the pizza dribbled off the pan in the final photo, some commenters expressed their discomfort and disgust.

"Can't believe you posted this. Not being a pizza snob or anything but assume that you have sampled real pizza at least once in your life? Why on earth would you promote such garbage? Would you serve this stuff to your international guests?? or is this just for the masses?" Kenneth Heagren said.

It was a view shared by many.

"If you're trying to deflect attention from Afghanistan or the continued mismanagement of common pool resources you're doing a good job mate because this is a monstrosity. couldn't even keep the toppings from sliding off the base?" Andrew Murray-Brown wrote.

"Definitely wouldn't trust you to feed your own family with this mess. Let alone keep NZ humming along so we don't have to eat something that looks like it was dredged from Auckland's ailing wastewater system."

One commenter kept it simple.

"Spaghetti and pineapple. Abomination," Gabriel Corban wrote.
