Frightening footage filmed from a car shows just how treacherous conditions are in Whakatane as Cyclone Cook pounds the Bay of Plenty.
Deafening downpours can be heard in the video posted to the Extreme Pursuit Facebook page as a couple drives along one of the main highways near the town.
"Look at that, I can't see!" a woman can be heard saying, "holy f**k!"
Cyclone Cook has brought widespread disruption to northern New Zealand with Bay of Plenty getting the worst battering.
There were fears it would hit Auckland, but Civil Defence has since scaled back its operations in the city.
