An all-women command team is about to take charge at an RNZAF base for the first time.

Wing Commander Berni Pothan and Warrant Officer Annette Walding will assume the respective appointments of Base Commander and Command Warrant Officer at Woodbourne on Tuesday.

The NZ Defence Force says this is the first time women have been simultaneously posted into both command positions.

Woodbourne, near Blenheim, is the RNZAF's training support base and is responsible for recruit, officer, trade and command training.

Wing Commander Pothan has been in the Air Force for more than 20 years and has held roles in operations, command and training.

Warrant Officer Walding, who has a technical background, has served for 29 years and has held trade, training and leadership roles.
