Firefighters have contained a large fire that broke out at an Auckland laundromat on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called just before 4am to reports of flames at the rear of the two storey building on Copsey Pl in Avondale.

The property was well ablaze when firefighters arrived.

Fourteen fire crews battled the fire.

It's not yet clear if it is suspicious. An investigator will re-visit the scene to determine the cause. It wasn't clear immediately how bad the damage was.

No one was in the laundry at the time, and no other buildings were under threat.
