Back office administration staff and other non-uniformed workers at the New Zealand Defence Force will walk off the job over the next week after pay talks collapsed.

Around 600 unionised workers claim they're paid $10,000 less than those who do the same jobs at similar organisations.

Top Brass at the Force are refusing to increase wages as part of a new collective employment agreement.

The Public Service Association (PSA) says industrial action is a last resort, with a strike planned in Palmerston North on Thursday and Wellington on Friday.

Two further strikes will happen next week at Devonport Naval Base in Auckland.

PSA general secretary Glenn Barclay says some civilian staff haven't had a pay rise in more than three years.

"This is not a decision our members have taken lightly, and they deeply regret that negotiations have come to this point," he said.

"Our members have decided to stand together and make their voices heard."

He says a recent internal Defence Force survey showed civilian staff had low confidence in leadership and little sense of a common purpose.
