A young man died at a public swimming pool in Auckland on Saturday night.

Police were called to the Parnell Baths just before 7:30pm. Ambulance staff were already there, attempting to revive the 20-year-old.

Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene.

Police say it was a stressful and upsetting time for the man's friends and family. Dozens of them gathered at the pools, sobbing and hugging each other, Fairfax reported.

Police could not confirm if he had been swimming before the incident, but suggested a pre-existing medical condition may have contributed to his death.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

Parnell Baths is owned by Auckland Council.
