A paraponter died in a crash on Robins Rd in Queenstown on Saturday morning.

It's thought the paraponter took off from the top of the Queenstown gondola route and missed the landing field.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 10am and the Civil Aviation Authority has been notified.

The incident happened at a popular paragliding landing space next to Queenstown Primar school.

The victim was dead when ambulance officers arrived, a St John spokesman confirmed to NZ Newswire.

"I think he dropped over near where the rugby field is coming off the gondola," an eyewitness told Fairfax.

"The flips started off and he just folded up."
