Carrie Fisher's memory is set to live on Wellington, with a Porirua couple hoping to use the force to draw over 600 Princess Leias.

Star Wars fans Nikky and Chris Winchester, both 44, are hoping to turn a bizarre vision into a reality, organising the world's first Princess Leia Day in Wellington in June.

Nikky described the world record attempt as "a bit bonkers", after a small idea snowballed into a big goal.

If all goes to plan, they need 600 Leias to ensure they set a world record. It seems they've been doing their research.

"The current Guinness World Record for the 'largest gathering of people dressed as princesses' stands at 341, and was set in the UK in 2014," says Chris. "Then a subsequent unofficial record of 537 was set in December 2015, also in the UK. Our target is to beat both, and establish a new record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the same princess."

"But it can only be officially ratified by Guinness World Records if we reach our ultimate goal of $7000, as there are fees to pay and we need to provide a lot of evidence," says Nikky.

"We'll have to keep cameras on the registration desk at all times and have one independent judge per 50 Leias to sign it off. It's quite an undertaking."

The weekend coincides with Wellington's Armageddon expo, meaning there will be "a big buzz in the city" says Nikky.

"We've chosen Saturday June 3 as it's during the NZ Comic Con / Armageddon expo festivities in Wellington, at the start of the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend, and just nine days after the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie."

The winter chill means the biggest challenge will be getting men into their best gold bikinis, says Chris, "but we're pushing for the blokes - we're hoping a couple of hardy souls will go for it."

Nikky says she think's Princess Leia is the movie world's most "kickass Princess" and a "fantastic role model".

"She's not waiting for her prince to come save her; she's the one getting out there and saving everyone."

In memory of mental health awareness advocate Carrie Fisher, any funds they receive beyond their $7000 extension goal will be donated to charities; half to the International Biploar Foundation and half to the New Zealand Mental Health Foundation.
