A fire that started in a rubbish skip in Richmond and flared into a large blaze in a nearby electrical warehouse is suspicious, the fire service says.

Teams from five fire stations in the Richmond and Nelson area were called to the blaze in McGlashen Avenue just after 11pm on Friday.

Wearing breath masks, the crews restricted the fire to the front of the two storey building and brought it under control by 1am on Saturday, a fire service spokesman said.
