A six-year-old New Zealand boy has died after being thrown from a fairground ride near Melbourne.

Eugene Mahauariki was on the Cha Cha ride at the Rye Easter Carnival when the accident happened on the Mornington Peninsula.

He was taken to hospital, but died on Saturday.

In a statement, his parents, Tammy and Stacey Mahauariki, said they couldn't imagine life without him.

"While our hearts are broken, it is important to us that Eugene is remembered as we knew and loved him. Eugene was a happy, kind and caring boy and he loved nothing more than to dance," they said.

"We could not have been more proud of him and cannot imagine our world without him."

His father is believed to have operated the ride and WorkSafe Victoria is investigating.
