A school rugby coach is facing 81 charges of sexual abuse against young boys.

If convicted, he will be one of New Zealand's worst school sex offenders, due to the high number of charges.

Alosio Taimo pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared at the High Court earlier this week.

Justice Simon Moore suppressed the name of the schools and clubs.

The 81 charges from nine complainants include 25 involving children under the age of 12. Another 49 charges involve boys aged 12-16, including unlawful sexual connection, indecent assault and committing an indecent act.

Taimo will reportedly plead not guilty. His trial is set down for five weeks, beginning in February next year.

If convicted on all the charges, Taimo will surpass the 74 charges admitted by New Zealand's worst convicted school sex offender, former deputy principal and paedophile James Parker.
