Two 14-year-old boys who became lost in a Lower Hutt bush have been found safe and well.

The two were found by members of the public who were walking in the area around 8:20am on Sunday.

The boys had planned a day trip in the East Harbour Regional Park on Saturday, so were not equipped for an overnight stay.

They contacted their families when they became lost, who contacted police.

Search and Rescue teams told them to stay put while ground teams, a sniffer dog and a helicopter scoured the area.

The search commenced at midnight on Saturday night, and started back up at first light on Sunday.

The pair are now back with their families and are being assessed by paramedics.
