South Island gets leftovers of Cook

Heavy rain fell along the South Island's east coast overnight bringing surface flooding and slips to some parts.

The 'eye' of the weakening Cyclone Cook made its way down over Cook Strait in the early hours of Friday morning and moved across the coast bringing flooding, road closures and slips around the northern parts of the South Island.

The Heathcote River which runs through the south side of Christchurch has breached its banks causing some trouble for locals.

"[The] river just come over the banks," resident Jimmy Roughan says.

"It's taken out the road pretty much, first time I've seen it like this."

Mr Roughan says he isn't concerned for his property but is cautious.

"It goes up, so it shouldn't come across [but I] wouldn't want it getting any higher."

The Christchurch City Council has activated temporary pumps to clear away water and have sent contractors out to clear grates and check for any blockages.

They also say some ash and soil from the Port Hills may get into some waterways.

Authorities have issued a warning to motorists to take care while driving and the NZTA have delayed the opening of State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura because of a number of small slips in the area and have closed some roads across the district because of slip risks.

Overnight the Motueka Valley Highway was closed by Police after the road was blocked by a large slip.

MetService have now lifted all heavy rainfall warnings and severe gale warnings associated with Cyclone Cook but say rain could reach warning levels on the West Coast, Otago and parts of Canterbury over the weekend as the Cyclone weakens.
