Two shot, gunman arrested in Canterbury

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in relation to the shooting of two women in Rolleston on Wednesday night.

The Armed Offenders Squad raided a property in Rakaia on Thursday morning where they made the arrest.

A Newshub reporter on the scene spoke to locals who say they saw the armed offenders squad descending on the property early on Thursday morning.

They estimate up to 12 police vehicles and multiple officers were part of the raid.

The two victims are in Christchurch Hospital with serious gunshot wounds after the incident at a house outside of Christchurch.

Police say man is known to the women.

The incident in Newtons Rd was reported to police about 10pm on Wednesday.

An ambulance spokesman said one woman had serious injuries and the second had moderate injuries.

Aggravated robbery in Ashburton

Police are also investigating an armed robbery at the Ashburton Hotel on Wednesday night.

The incident happened about 60km away from the Rolleston shooting and just over an hour afterwards.

A lone man was seen entering the property and fired one shot before taking an unknown amount of cash.

Police say there were at least four people in the hotel at the time.

Authorities cannot confirm if the two incidents are related.
