Severe weather has thrashed central New Zealand on Sunday night, downing power lines and damaging one house to the point it partially collapsed.

Lower Hutt's Marine Dr has been forced to close due to the weather, with police saying waves have been crashing over the road and leaving debris on the service.

The intensity of the storm can be seen in a video filmed by Chris Andrews, who caught the waves crashing over the road at Days Bay, Eastbourne.

A house in Hawera, on Turuturu Rd, partially collapsed due to damage from the heavy rain on Sunday.

A fire service spokesperson told Newshub all of the occupants were safe inside the rest of the building.

Around 1300 houses in Lower Hutt were without power at one point, however power has since been restored to a number of them.
